Ahh, the joys of technology and progress.
Nikon just recently released their Nikon Coolpix AW100 16 MP CMOS Waterproof Digital Camera with GPS and Full HD 1080p Video and 5x Zoom. Wow, that’s a mouthful. This is a sweet little camera. Recently there’s been a spate of waterproof and shockproof digital cameras on the market, but for me this might just be the one I actually go out and buy. Why? Because it’s awesome, it takes great pictures, and just look at that orange.

Waterproof Digital Camera = Awesome
See, I’ve had my fair share of broken cameras, busted LCD displays and daughters being less than careful with grape juice. I’ve ruined a handful of cameras in my day due to these and other more embarrassing reasons.
So, those daily-life illustrations out of the way, what’s so good about the Nikon Coolpix AW100 over the other ones available on the market? Well, the 16 megapixel sensor is nice as a lot of the other cameras in this segment run 12 MP. Perhaps one of the nicest touches in my mind is the GPS. A lot of people have been talking about convergence for some time and this is just one more example of different products being combined and making one or the other obsolete. With the GPS functions built into this camera plus the ubiquitous smart phone, you’ll be unlikely to get too far lost as long as your batteries remain charged up. Being able to tag your photos with location is cool, but using this as a back-up GPS is icing on the cake.
Waterproof Shockproof Digital Camera = Ultra Awesome
I get it, you’re saying. It’s shockproof, waterproof and it’s got GPS built in. But how are the pictures? Well, by all accounts the Nikon AW100 takes pretty awesome pictures as well. It’s got 5 stabilization settings to keep shaky little hands from ruining pictures (or shaky big hands). It can automatically track objects or subjects that are moving and adjust focus settings to make sure they don’t blur out right when you don’t want them to. If it’s cold you can still operate when wearing gloves. Did I mention its freezeproof? Yeah, it’s freezeproof too. It can take 1080p movies.

If you’re looking for a 5x zoom waterproof digital camera that can withstand a bit of shock and being frozen as well (and really, who isn’t looking for that in a camera) you really should take a good hard look at the Nikon Coolpix AW100. I myself am about to pull the trigger on it over at Amazon (they’ve got the best prices that I’ve seen). It seems to be an awesome little camera at a reasonable price which will not only take some amazing shots, but will also stand up to my abuse, my daughter’s abuse and even that of my friends.
